Public Lecture

A Public Lecture delivered by ENGR. SOLOMON OLAWALE OJOAWO, JP, FNSE at the 2022 Graduate Induction Ceremony for the Final Year Engineering Graduates of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH), Oyo State, on Thursday, 19th May, 2022

What are the Potentials in you to Maximize?

  1. Ability to appreciate the life – long leaning & training of basic capacity building of which you have acquired as undergraduates.
  2. Collaborative Approach with course mates and inter – disciplinary professionals (teams)
  3. Active participation in the activities of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) at Divisions, Branches and National Levels. This shall enable you all to have proper understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  4. Ability to make societal impacts in research and developments with your high technical and moral standards.
  5. Ability to exercise qualitative leadership skills, judgements and self-restraint. All these you have acquired in your AMES, ACES, NUESA, SUG, etc as members, EXCOS, Legislative and Judiciary Arms. Some Engineers are trained as Lawyers, Accountants, etc and making serious impacts in the Society.
  6. Ability to participate actively in the LAUTECH Alumni Associations at Branches and Globally.
  7. Make aspirations to actively participate in Nigerian Politics at various levels. This will assist us to boost the morale of others and set pace. All of us can see how His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, FNSE has been transforming the Education, Agriculture, Security, Health, Road’s infrastructures, Energy, Commerce, etc within the past 2 years. *The today’s Sole Ownership of LAUTECH by Oyo State after about 30 years of joint ownership with our Sister’s State (Osun) and peaceful disengagement of both alliance is an unprecedented achievement of this present administration in Nigeria.

What are the present and future global challenges to fresh undergraduates?

  • To go for NYSC
  • To get settled down (as big boys & girls)
  • To pursue further studies, M.Sc., Ph.D., Professional examinations – NSE, COREN, etc.
  • To travel overseas: looking for greener pastures
  • To get employment in SPDC, Mobil, Stumberger, Federal Civil Service, Banks, etc.
  • To join the Military for short services training, NAVY, Airforce, NDA, etc.

CONCLUSIONS: –

Methodologies to maximize the Potentials: –

  1. By identifying yourself truly. What has been deposited in you over the years? What are your likes and dislikes? What are your visions and missions? Where you came from? Where you ought to have been? Where you want to be? Etc.
  2. Do something at all times. Never get tired, make trials! Never get discourage, even when you fail in multiple trials of your goals – ‘’I have been denied Visa before as NYSC Member’’. But…………….. Remember the dictums of life ‘’You must try, try and try again’’ until you succeed.
  3. Humble beginnings of life for everyone. The journey of 1 million miles starts with a step and ends with another step when time comes. Time and tides wait for no man.
  4. Make adequate preparations, better analytical conceptualization of your goals, set alternative approaches for implementations (either, or) if then, what next? There are solutions to all problems.
  5. Identify Mentor(s) and take good counsels and experience Personalities around you, irrespective of religions, political affiliations, tribes, professions, etc.
  6. Tap from available resources; soft loans from Bank of Industry, NGO Supports, Family & Friends, etc.
  7. Reduce your extravagancy! Everything is not enjoyment! After graduation, only a few parents would afford sending you stipends to survive. You have to work hard within your limitations, save substantial amount of your income for future investments and core responsibilities of life. ‘’ I started with N2000 monthly stipends at NFI Insurance Plc, I managed to save 50% of same amount for many years thereafter.
  8. Consistency and sustainability of your achieved success. Watch the type of friends you move with. Take care of your good parents/guardians who have laboured for you to have sponsored you to this stage. Work harmoniously with your spouses, your bosses and colleagues at works place, know fully that success is much more difficult to manage than failure. Above all, leave stages at every point in your life when your ovation is loud!

Thank you all for listening!

Introduction: –

Permit me to appreciate the Organizers of this epoch-making event for the opportunity given to me to deliver this lecture series, as the First Alumnus of the Faculty in that honour roll. I must confess to you all that, I have no regret in passing through LAUTECH as Undergraduate for my basic engineering training, which has taken me to all the geopolitical zones in Nigeria and of course most of the Continents of the World. It would interest you all present, that hardly could I not find among the places I have touched for one assignment or the other, one, two or more LAUTECH Products – tremendously excelling. Time will not permit me to mention full details of such past experiences till date.

Special Appreciations –

My encouragement and motivation to study Engineering was dated back to 1990/1991 when this great citadel of leaning was just established during the regime of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babaginda (Rtd), of which my elder Brother and Mentor, Prof. Samson Ojoawo was admitted here as one of the ALPHA Sets. I don’t want to go into the rigorous comparism of Undergraduate Admissions of those past decades and today. The divine arrangements that brought me here has actually reshaped my life till today. My chief Tutorial Master in Undergraduate & Master’s Degree Class (Prof. Teslim Asafa), Dr. Emmanuel Sangotayo and many other Faculty – mates are excelling in their academic career at LAUTECH, Many Private Universities, Federal Universities and even in some overseas Institutions. I remember recently in the test – running activities of the COREN (Outcome – Based Evaluation) OBE Evaluators training at Abuja, when one of my Senior Colleague, Engr. Dr. Eyitayo Afolabi was one of the major facilitators of the entire Nationwide activities – which was meant to boost the practice of Engineering in Nigeria and globally. I also remember Prof. Tola Alamu, my Senior Colleague & Lecturer, who was appointed as Acting Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN some few years back, and many more.

I remember that in my M.Sc. class at the University of Ibadan in 2005/2006, between 25 and 30 students were initially admitted for the programme, out of about 10 people that completed the programme as at when due, ALL THE FOUR (4) OF US FROM LAUTECH could make the list. This proved to us the qualitative foundation we have all had in this place. However, many of these Academic & Non – Academic Staff who graciously trained some of us are still very much around with fresh knowledge to be impacted on you all. We are most grateful to those who have retired, or transferred their services, or transformed into the grate beyond – may the Lord continue to be with their families. Prof. Loto, Prof. Edewoh, Prof. Raji, Prof. Ogunrounbi, Dr. Odugbenro, etc
